The co-founder and co-CEO of the European Defence-AI company Helsing, Gundbert Scherf, and Estonia’s Minister of Defence, Hanno Pevkur, signed a statement together reaffirming their shared commitment to developing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and utilizing them to advance Estonia’s defence capabilities.
Software-defined reconnaissance and strike capabilities are only two of the AI-enabled solutions that the Ministry of Defence is investigating, along with other cutting-edge defence technology for the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF). An important step in these efforts is the cooperation with Helsing’s Estonian entity, Helsing OÜ, which is in line with Estonia’s strategic goal of advancing national security and luring leading European defence businesses.
The joint declaration states that, building on recent insights from international wars, both sides would collaborate to investigate the deployment of advanced AI capabilities for the EDF. The parties will look for ways to work together while testing new technology.
Hanno Pevkur, the minister of defence for Estonia, applauded Helsing’s choice to launch operations there and emphasized the nation’s dedication to promoting defence technological innovation and national security. Strong deterrence and strong government-industry partnership are essential to addressing changing security issues and developing Defence AI capabilities for NATO’s eastern flank, according to Dr. Gundbert Scherf, Co-CEO of Helsing.
