A €60 million contract has been awarded to Open Cosmos, a prominent supplier of space missions and data, to deploy an Earth Observation Constellation made up of seven satellites that will deliver daily high-resolution and very-high-resolution imagery.
The Hellenic Government’s endeavour to provide Greece and the European populace with economic and environmental advantages is exemplified by this flagship initiative, which is a component of the procurement of a sophisticated satellite constellation. The information gathered from this constellation will be crucial in enhancing government services like the land register, reducing marine pollution, and boosting agricultural productivity.
Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou, the Minister of Digital Governance, emphasized:
Greece is progressing rapidly in space. Our goal is to support the growth of the local high-tech space sectors, create jobs, keep our talented engineers and space experts in the nation, and draw in new talent by funding both capacity-building and capacity-buying space programs. Cutting-edge satellite technology development will support the nation’s long-term economic resilience by fostering the creation of a sustainable economic framework that incorporates the advanced scientific and technology sectors.
The CEO of Open Cosmos, Rafel Jorda Siquier, praised his team’s hard work and cutting-edge technology while expressing delight in securing a significant Greek satellite program. The initiative will strengthen Open Cosmos’s standing in the market with its seven satellites equipped with cutting-edge sensors, IoT, AIS(Automatic Identification System) receivers, and onboard artificial intelligence. It will work with the Atlantic constellation and supplement the EU Copernicus system in collaboration with the European Space Agency.
The Greek Constellation project was awarded to Open Cosmos by ESA’s director of Earth Observation, Simonetta Cheli, underscoring the organization’s dedication to assisting national projects and promoting cooperation among its member states. Open Cosmos Aegean, a new manufacturing facility designed to boost Greece’s satellite capabilities and draw investment, will construct and run the satellites. In addition to managing regional sales, this centre will assist with European and global initiatives.
The director of Open Cosmos Aegean, Dr. Maria Kalama, stated: In every nation where we operate, including Greece, we have established a thriving ecosystem of vendors and service providers. We extend our gratitude to all of our partners for helping us to secure this contract, especially to Nova ICT, EMTECH-Space, the Libre Space Foundation, Planetek Hellas, Adamant Composites, and Priority consultants, who were our primary collaborators in Greece.
