The U.S. Air Force has received the first MH-139A Grey Wolf produced by Boeing. This aircraft will be based at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. It is a part of an order for 13 helicopters placed in 2023 for Low Rate Initial Production.
Azeem Khan, the executive director and program manager for the MH-139, stated, “This aircraft will directly support ongoing U.S. Air Force modernization efforts.” “The future of national security depends on the delivery of this asset for the MH-139A fleet, as the Grey Wolf will be an essential component of the U.S. nuclear triad for many years to come.”
The U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing seven more MH-139A aircraft in 2024. Boeing presently has 26 aircraft under contract, six of which are research, development, test, and evaluation aircraft that have previously been delivered.
The MH-139A can carry out numerous mission sets thanks to a 5,000 pound increase in max gross weight and a 50% increase in speed and range over its predecessor. The aircraft offers the U.S. Air Force enhanced capability and better flexibility in addition to reduced operating costs, increased reliability, and improved maintainability.
Leonardo is an original equipment manufacturer and Boeing is the prime contractor on the MH-139A team. While Boeing handles the purchase, installation, and post-delivery maintenance of military equipment, Leonardo manufactures the baseline helicopter at its site in northeast Philadelphia.
