A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Airbus Defence and Space Limited and Astroscale Limited, the UK branch of Astroscale Holdings, the industry leader in satellite servicing and long-term orbital sustainability, to investigate joint opportunities in the areas of on-orbit servicing and space debris removal.
This strategic partnership intends to advance the UK’s efforts in the on-orbit manufacturing and servicing industry and create a circular economy in space by utilizing the strengths and capabilities of both companies to address the growing challenges of space sustainability and satellite longevity.
Safe space missions require the removal of space trash, with an emphasis on novel capture techniques like as the Airbus VISPA robotic arm in Astroscale missions. While improvements in rendezvous and docking assure safe satellite operations, on-orbit servicing and satellite refuelling work to increase the lifespan of satellites and decrease trash. In order to save waste and expenses, on-orbit assembly constructs spacecraft components in orbit. This promotes a circular economy.
Managing Director of Astroscale UK Nick Shave commented, “By partnering with Airbus, we are taking a major step forward in advancing the UK’s leadership in the in-orbit servicing and manufacturing industry.” “Our combined efforts will help create a circular economy in space where resources are reused and repurposed, in addition to extending the life and efficiency of space assets. In order to solve the problems caused by space debris and guarantee a sustainable space environment for future generations, this cooperation is essential.
“With thousands of tons of space junk in orbit, ensuring space sustainability is vital to protect the space environment and the satellites that are key to our daily lives, providing navigation and other services,” stated Patrick Wood, Head of Space Systems UK, Airbus Defence and Space.
