The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have awarded a C$35.8 million contract to GM Defence Canada, a subsidiary of GM Defence, for 90 light tactical vehicles (LTVs), with the option to purchase up to 18 more LTVs. In addition, technical manuals, training, and more vehicle content generated from Canadian industries will be provided by GM Defence Canada.
A new utility variant of the LTVs, which utilizes the design of a tried-and-true system now in use by the U.S. Army, as well as nine-passenger LTVs are being provided by GM Defence Canada as part of the contract. The NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Multinational Battlegroup in Latvia will be supported by LTVs from GM Defence Canada. Soldiers will be able to traverse difficult terrain with greater speed, range, and safety thanks to the vehicles.
Steve duMont, president of GM Defence, stated, “We are providing this critical capability to the Canadian Armed Forces within a timeline that meets their urgent operational requirement. We see the awarding of this contract as the start of a long-term strategic partnership to provide Soldiers with improved tactical mobility both now and in the future with the Canadian Armed Forces.” We will keep utilizing General Motors’ extensive resources as we grow into Canada and other allies across the world to make sure our government and defence clients have the greatest tools possible to carry out their missions.
Kristian Aquilina, president and managing director of GM Canada, stated, “General Motors’ support of the Canadian Armed Forces with this contract is a prime example of the meaningful contributions GM makes in Canada.” “We are happy GM can also make an impact in the defence space, whether it be through the supply of light tactical vehicles through GM Defence Canada or the contributions of our Canadian Technical Centre in supporting the development of those vehicles.”
