Saab has chosen Babcock to assist with the design of the new Luleå-class Surface Combatant being developed for the Swedish Navy. Four vessels for the Swedish Navy will be designed by Saab under a contract with FMV, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration. In order to help Saab finish the basic design phase, Babcock will first provide engineering support, including structural design and auxiliary systems.
Senior representatives from the Swedish Navy, UK Royal Navy, FMV, Saab, and Babcock convened at Babcock’s Rosyth facility in Scotland to initiate an ambitious new partnership in naval program delivery. This partnership builds upon the Strategic Cooperation Agreement that Saab and Babcock signed at DSEI in September 2023. In order to find possible export markets for the Luleå design, Babcock and Saab will collaborate closely.
“We are proud to take on the mission to start the basic design of the new Luleå-class for Sweden and happy to cooperate with Babcock in this project,” stated Mats Wicksell, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Kockums at Saab. The cooperation between Swedish and British shipbuilders is significant, and I anticipate strong partnership to bolster Sweden’s maritime capabilities.
“This is a hugely important program for the Swedish Navy, Saab, and Babcock,” stated David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock. Our combined strengths in Rosyth and Karlskrona will guarantee that we produce a design for the new Luleå platforms that is unparalleled in its class.
