The Bundeswehr has tasked Rheinmetall with a major tactical communications project that will have a cross-functional impact on the entire force. A contract for up to 191,000 sets of the “intercom with hearing protection function” has been awarded to the technological company. The seven-year framework contract can have a maximum order value of €400 million net.
The initiative was subject to constraints imposed by the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee. A solid order has been placed for 30,000 units, including connection cables, with delivery scheduled for 2024. There is anticipated to be a call-off for the supply of an additional 30,000 sets in 2025. The net worth of these two delivery batches, which were funded by the special fund, might reach approximately €140 million.
The active capsule ear protection in the modern intercom(SmG in German, for “Sprechsatz mit Gehörschutzfunction”) with hearing protection function attenuates dangerous impulsive noise and boosts tranquil sounds. It may be connected to different radio devices and features a microphone, enabling radio communication. The scope of supply also comprises multiple cable sets and push-to-talk (PTT) buttons for connecting to different radios and on-board communication systems, in addition to the integrated headset. Two prominent manufacturers have been brought on board by Rheinmetall as subcontractors for the project: CeoTronics AG, with its CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C headset, and 3M Peltor, with their ComTac VIII headset. The SmG is compatible with many models of Bundeswehr helmets as well as the new combat helmet supplied by Rheinmetall.
This purchase demonstrates Rheinmetall’s leadership position in the military equipment market. Under the System Infantry Soldier of the Future – Expanded System, the technology business is the main contractor for the Bundeswehr. Rheinmetall sells their Gladius soldier system in a number of worldwide versions.
