The Spanish government has declared its intention to upgrade and purchase more NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘KONGSBERG’) in a transaction estimated to be worth EUR 410 million.
A notification of award for the NASAMS modernization program was filed on April 19 by the Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), the Spanish Armaments Directorate. Through this effort, Spain’s current NASAMS capabilities will be greatly increased, and the relationship between Spain and Norway will be further strengthened. In May 2024, the contract is anticipated to be signed.
NASAMS, a joint offering from KONGSBERG and Raytheon, is the most advanced medium-range defence system in the world.
Spain has been using NASAMS for more than 20 years and was the first nation outside of the United States to do so. Currently serving in the Baltics as part of NATO’s Air Shielding Mission are Spanish NASAMS units. Currently, the NASAMS user group consists of thirteen NATO and partner countries.
